Spammer 'sending from' your own email address?

What I don't understand is how this is possible to do: a spammer picks up your email address from wherever, and then keeps sending you unsolicited email ads, which shows the ‘Sender’ is your own email address? That means, if my address is abc@ yahoo.com; both the 'From' and the ‘To’ panel shows abc@yahoo.com?

How can that be? It only means that the spammer can read your emails at that address! Are they that sophisticated nowadays?

This is the first that I've hear of this scenario. I'm really not sure that it would be possible unless the hacker can gain access to your account.

I believe everyone of us are aware that there is a facility available through which one can store all passwords at a single location. Is there any remote chance to hack that site and do this kind of activities? I doubt so.

So the question is if someone can hack into a program like Oracle and then gain access to everything on that specific platform?

I don't think it's with hacking of Oracle. I too read about Google is providing a service whereby anyone can just store all of their known password there and retrieve as and when required. Hackers could have hacked that site or with doubt, it's a rare case to hack one's mail id from such powerful email service providers.

I just had this happen to me on my personal email account... apparently I sent links for Viagra and other very inappropriate content to my Grandfather and everyone else in my contacts.... It was most of the day before I even realized it, then I got a few calls asking about it and had to email out to everyone to not check their email or click on any links...

I was so worried about sending them a virus or something...

Carl, you still may have a

Carl, you still may have a virus! But also what it could be is your email account password was hacked. You could have a keylogger installed on your system. It could track everything you type and send it back to the owner of the program. They sort through to detect passwords, and then log in to your email account.

Most of the time, this is an automated program, since it relies on sheer numbers rather than a focused attack. Once they have your email password, they will either send out spam emails to your contact list with a link to their website or an affiliate link, or they will edit your email signature so every email you send has a link at the bottom.

Most people (hackers included) are lazy. It's much easier to set up an automated program with the sole purpose to put in a spammy link into people's emails. However, if someone gets your email password, they could manually log in to your email and sort through it for personal information like log ins to other sites, bank accounts, etc.

I would do a virus scan using two different programs. On my PCs/Laptops, I use Comodo, Kaspersky (Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 - essential protection for email and non-web based applications.) and Malwarebytes. That might seem overkill to some, but I've never had malware go very long without being detected, and never had any security breach or accounts hacked (knock on wood). Of course, change your email password to something new. Be prepared to wipe your hard drive and reinstall your OS. Good luck. Come back and ask if this doesn't work.
