For operations center staff: rotating shifts or set schedule

After posting about salary versus hourly pay, it brought to mind another question for those other members out there:

Are you on a set schedule (8am-5pm for example) or do you rotate shifts? This is mainly for the operations center since that is my area of expertise, but it could also apply for the data center itself.

Re: For operations center staff: rotating shifts or set sche

We do not recommend our clients rotate shifts in the data center. Much of the work can be done during the day during normal business hours. Major upgrades are scheduled overnight. Those major systems upgrades are the only exception to the "rotating shift" rule. During major upgrades in the data center, our clients typically call in the majority of their staff in case the upgrade goes haywire.

Rotating shifts is a good idea, but good luck getting your people to go along with it.

I dated a girlfriend who rotated schedules, I hated the weeks when she had the crappy late schedule but ultimatley I think it was fair overall. No one had the cushy schedule all the time and in my opinion it keeps turn over lower
