How to bring in Outside Air into data center?

Our consulting engineer we typically use has recommended we begin bringing in outside air into the data center to head off new ASHRAE requirements. He is recommending installing a rooftop dedicated outside air unit and ducting it into the data center (in addition to our existing CRAC units).

We would love to hear some other ideas on how to bring in outside air into a data center without spending too much money and without a complete rennovation of our facility.

Thank you!

Can you provide more

Can you provide more information:

  • Size of Data Center
  • Number, type and capacity of existing CRAC units
  • How much CFM of outside air is your engineer suggesting?
  • Drop ceiling in data center?

There are ways to bring in outside air to an existing data center without breaking the bank, and really, the amount of outside air needed for a data center is low.

HI and thank you for your

HI and thank you for your reply. To answer your questions:

  • approx 3,000 sq ft.
  • (6) 30 ton air cooled crac units
  • he suggested 5%
  • yes the ceiling height is 10' drop ceiling, 16'  to the top of the roof.

Thank you!

Ok so with your six CRAC

Ok so with your six CRAC units, 30 tons each, you have roughly 70,000-80,000 CFM depending of course on what brand CRAC unit and what model.

5% Outside Air would be 3,600 CFM

10% Outside Air would be 7,200 CFM

Really, you're looking at a relatively small HVAC unit to provide your outside air.

It seems like the biggest challenge will be where in your data center are you going to locate the new unit, how will you duct in the outside air and how will you evenly distribute the outside air to your data center.
