There seems to be a change in the air the past few years when it comes to data center air conditioning. I am beginning to see many data centers NOT using the typical CRAC unit (Liebert, Stulz, etc...) Some large data centers are using large built-up air handlers such as Buffalo, Air Enterprises, etc.
I am assuming larger air handling units have benefits such as economies of scale versus smaller CRAC units which would require a facilities manager to purchase and install more quantity of the smaller units.

Custom Air Handlers can offer a data center economies of scale for cooling. CRACs and CRAHs just aren't made as big as custom air handlers.
Depends on the size of the data center. The larger you get, the more custom AHUs make sense. We're talking a hundred thousand square feet or more as a VERY general rule of thumb for CRAC versus Custom AHU.
